Plant Cells to be Investigated for Better Fuels

US - The newly funded Center for Lignocellulose Structure and Formation at Pennsylvania State University will be home to investigations into plant cells to produce better biomass fuels. The US DOE will fund the center with $21 million for over five years as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, according to the university.

FedEx Targets 30 Per Cent Biofuels

US - US courier service FedEx has called for a third of its jet fuel to come from biofuels by 2030.

Speaking at the US Chamber of Commerce Aviation Summit in Washington, FedEx chief executive Fred Smith said the "30 by 30" target aims to use second-generation biofuels from feedstocks such as jatropha, algae, switchgrass and camelina.
